UK social housing providers get sustainability support

A WWF-sponsored sustainability assessment scheme, which helps social housing providers to make new and existing homes more eco-friendly, has been launched this week.
Several housing associations have already joined the Sustainable Homes Index For Tomorrow (SHIFT) scheme, which offers members an independent and comprehensive assessment of their sustainability performance and detailed recommendations on how to reach the highest standards.
Zoe Leader, homes policy officer at WWF-UK, says: "Housing associations and local authorities have the opportunity to be trailblazers in sustainability, setting standards in affordable, eco-friendly accommodation. Monitoring their approach to sustainability, and helping them reduce their carbon footprint will be crucial in driving further progress, not just for new homes, but also for their existing stock."
WWF-UK already supports NextGeneration, which provides an assessment service for private homebuilders. Since it launched, NextGeneration has seen its membership expand to include the UK's top homebuilders, responsible for building more than half of all new homes in the UK.
